The Holidays are here! Although family, fun and good cheer may distract us, MMPA is still focused on strategies to bring work opportunities to our members. This past month MMPA registered several new members! Even though we continue to lose a few members each month, several factors are bringing companies to MMPA's door. First, our association is very visible with state and national affiliations, officials and the business community. Secondly, MMPA is affiliated with several other industry associations to develop business strategies helping Maine companies to work together. Thirdly, our focus is on creating these business strategies and benefit programs for members. And lastly, the dedication of the board, staff and members to build the association is making a great difference.
In the New Year, MMPA will work on some big events: increased member tours, board meetings, "town meetings" around the state. Also we will be working on a roundtable meeting with a group of industry association boards to discuss how we can collaborate more effectively, bring contract work and opportunities to our Maine association members and create a strong voice for manufacturers in Maine. We will keep you posted as things progress. Have a safe and wonderful holiday season. Please don't hesitate to call or email the MMPA staff. Check the MMPA web site (we are getting a good number of hits per day)! Duane had hosted Secretary of Commerce Evans in early September. As a result of the visit and discussions regarding issues with small business, Sec. Evans invited Duane to bring solutions to Washington. The members of the SBA appeared unaware of the struggles of small business trying to execute DOD or government work. Duane and Eric shared the daily problems of communication, regulations, and other issues that prohibit many small businesses from working with government contractors and prime contractors. They also presented the New England supply chain initiative as one solution. The afternoon meeting with Linda Oliver and Peter Ramos from the Department of Defense Small & Disadvantaged Business Utilization branch was quite interesting (it lasted almost 4 hours). It was the DOD's opinion that small business was not able to act as Prime Contractor because of the demands and requirements of the DOD contracts. D&G's main recommendation was to support the New England supply chain initiative. Both Ms. Oliver and Mr. Ramos thought that the supply chain initiative was a great program and if successful could affect the role of small business. Overall the meeting was a success.
