After the tours, we had dinner at Butler Bros. facility where Lisa introduced new association members Darrin Daigneault, Central Machine; Rob Giffin, Maine Maritime Academy; and Beth Adams, Striker International. After that Chuck DeGrandpre, EVM and Pat Butler, Butler Bros. talked about best practices and gave us a brief history of their companies. ![]() Thank you again to those two great companies for their warm welcome and great support to the MMPA. ![]() Letter from the President We have an exciting upcoming tour season with Pratt & Whitney in February, Maine Maritime Academy in March, Maine Machine Products in April and a first time " Northern Maine Matchmakers Business Conference" being held April 28-30 in Houlton and Presque Isle. Keep checking your email and the newsletter for more information. MMPA will be preparing a plan for our "Town Meetings" to gather input and determine the direction of the association and its current name. Our thoughts are that the industry is more a precision manufacturing industry, using higher technology and it's more representative of the future of the industry. Lastly, the staff is working incredibly hard to bring in new members and assist those current members who are having business challenges. We can do a lot for our association by asking ONE supplier or vendor to join MMPA and assist our member companies with sub work when available and suitable to do so. Don't forget, we stand strong as an industry! Not only did we support our fellow industry associations, but were treated to lunch and a several great presentations. The afternoon sessions started with Thom LaBrie, Auburn Enterprises, presenting "Maine Made and Green", who is taking on a monumental project to unite the forest products industry! Tom began by sharing the history of the industry, elements of the current situation and where the industry must go to survive. We were enthralled with the presentation content and saw several parallel issues and ideas. It's in our best interest to work with the MWPA in some Maine economic development initiatives (intra-state supply chain opportunities). In Tom's speech regarding the de-industrialization of America, he addressed how a 3-inch lathed wooden dowel impacts the industry, companies, and layers upon layers of workers from loggers, harvesters to the lathe operator and beyond. Then he described how the loss of that one product impacts the workforce and other adjacent industries (such as the machining industry). It was a powerful visual to see what is happening to America's manufacturing industries with this one example of a small wooden dowel! Great job MWPA! | |||
