Central Maine Community College Receives NIMS Accreditation

MMPA congratulates the Machine Tool Technology Program at CMCC for successfully completing the National Institute of Metalworking Skills (NIMS) accreditation process. CMCC is officially designated as a NIMS accredited Training Program. This evaluation and accreditation process is very rigorous with over a year of preparation.

CMCC is the first Community College and the second educational institute in Maine (Mid-Maine Technical Center in Waterville was the first) to receive NIMS accreditation.

More than four years ago, MMPA begin working with the national NIMS office to bring the national industry standards to Maine's education institutes and MMPA members. During this time, twelve technical high schools have all adopted NIMS standards and all have various levels of student participation and instructor certification.

The four community colleges (CMCC, SMCC, EMCC and NMCC) were all interested in working with NIMS standards. CMCC was the first to pursue the accreditation program and receive it. MMPA will continue to work with the other community colleges to encourage and assist in working with the NIMS program.

MMPA has been working with USM, Center for workplace Learning's "MetalWorks" project in assessing which MMPA member companies are interested in testing and certifying their workforce with NIMS certification. We have come a long way in the past few years with the NIMS standards! Congratulations to CMCC!

    River Valley Technology Center

The River Valley Technology Center acknowledged MMPA's support of the RVTC Machine Tool Technology training program by providing scholarships for students to continue their education to complete the two-year Associate degree program. A small recognition ceremony was held at RVTC and received favorable press coverage.

A major milestone was reached on August 4, 2003 when a contract was signed with CCB, Inc. of Westbrook, Maine to accomplish the necessary renovation work to its building in Rumford. This $2.8 Million will allow RVTC to move into the building in mid-2004. RVTC is seeking companies and entrepreneurs who wish to take advantage of the incubator services it provides.
All interested parties should contact Norm MacIntyre at 207-369-9368 or normm@rivervalleycenter.com
