MMPA NEWSLETTER - AUGUST 2003Read our previous issues: MMPA Member Benefits Expansion MMPA is pleased to announce the expansion of our membership benefits programs! In the past few months, MMPA has been exploring various programs and services to offer you. As you may know, MMPA currently offers dental and life insurance and pre-paid legal services. In addition, we have an equipment-leasing program (see Kingswood Leasing ad) and are offering website development, hosted on the MMPA web site. MMPA has begun "Prospect Business" referrals through email as companies request manufacturers to produce products and worker recruitment through emailing resumes. The Center for Economic Business Research (CEBR) at USM provided MMPA with some research information based on national and state trade associations. This comprehensive list outlines an array of programs that can be created for members. Our sincere thanks to Bruce Andrews for this research! MMPA is interested in knowing what programs and services are most important to you. With this information we can proceed in finding the best providers. MMPA is supporting the Association Health Plan (AHP), federal legislation sponsored by Senator Snowe. This will allow trade associations to offer affordable health insurance to our members. (see MESDA web site www.mesda.com/features/ahp_about.aspx) MMPA has criteria in selecting programs: 1) the program(s) must offer our members beneficial programs and services and 2) the programs can/will generate revenue for the association. Here is a list of programs we are researching:
Letter from the President
Hope you are enjoying the summer! Maine is a great place to live! As we approach the late summer, MMPA is gearing up for our 14th Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament. This event raises scholarship funds to support the education and training of several students. This year, MMPA awarded 17 scholarships totaling over $11,000 for 2003-2004! Congratulations to all the awardees.
MMPA continues to work on organizing the Manufacturing Supply Chain Consortium with Maine MEP. We will keep you informed as things progress. We are also preparing for our 39th Annual Meeting on October 3rd, 2003. Look for the save-the-date cards in the mail. Our fall tours will resume in September starting with BIW. We have some great tours lined up! These tours are an excellent networking opportunity for prospect business. A few important things to note: You should all be receiving emails from the MMPA office. If you are not, please call our office! These emails contain vital information such as prospect business opportunities, resumes of dislocated workers and job seekers and event reminders. Frequently the MMPA office receives requests from companies looking to sub work out to members. The staff sends them out to all members. This is part of our efforts to increase economic opportunities for MMPA members. I look forward to seeing you on the golf course! Bob King, VP & Co-Owner, Steele & Marshall, Inc. Maine Technology Institute 2E Mechanic Street Gardiner, ME 04235 207-582-4790 info@mainetechnology.org www.mainetechnology.org Employers Meet to Improve New Employee Recruitment Tool The staff of MMPA, Maine CareerCenters, and USM's former MetalWorks-now-PrecisionWorks have coordinated efforts to design a new employee recruitment tool for use by both metals industry employers and CareerCenter staff. This tool, originally intended for entry-level workers, has now been redesigned to include the hiring of new employees at all skill ability levels. The original draft was reviewed and significantly improved through discussions that took place in late June at two regional meetings hosted by Wick Johnson at Kennebec Tool and Die in Augusta and Sam Cushing at Rich Tool and Die Company in Scarborough. Participants included representatives from six metals industry employers, four representatives from the CareerCenters, two representatives from the MetalWorks Project, and MMPA Executive Director, Lisa G. Martin. Participants all agreed on the need for a new employee recruitment process based on terminology readily understood by both employers and CareerCenter personnel. The primary purpose of the meeting was to obtain valuable feedback from employers about the range and depth of information they would find useful through implementation of this new tool. Until now, local CareerCenter staff has experienced difficulty in referring appropriate job applicants in the metals industry because job titles and skill descriptions were not uniform across the industry. A secondary purpose of the meeting was to provide employers with new information about a range of no- or low-cost services offered through their local CareerCenters. Similarly, the meeting represented an opportunity for CareerCenter staff to learn about recruitment issues directly from employers. This new recruitment tool is based, in part, on the National Institute for Metalworking Skills, Inc. (NIMS) standards and certifications that represent common skill sets and language that describes them. Both the MetalWorks Project and MMPA have actively supported both technical (now-community) colleges and the regional vocational high schools, as well as metals industry employers, in an on-going campaign to provide employees with opportunities to take courses leading to NIMS certifications in their respective metal-working fields. Organizers of the employer meetings envision this recruitment tool becoming a model for other industries such as hospitality, marine trade, electronics, and wood products because they have experienced similar needs for a more comprehensive and precise approach to hiring personnel. CareerCenters personnel, too, are invested in streamlining the recruitment process to become more effective in assisting their joint customers, employers and qualified job seekers, each with their own overlapping expectations.
