Manufacturers Association of Maine
Aerospace Cluster Development Project
Executive Summary
In March 2007, the Manufacturer's Association of Maine (MAMe) received a $50,000 Cluster Enhancement Award from the Maine Technology Institute (MTI). The goal of this six-month project is to get a better understanding of Maine-based companies who work in, or want to work in the aircraft, aerospace and aviation (AAA) industry. MAMe, in partnership with Coastal Counties Workforce, Inc., MESDA, and other industry experts, will use this project to better understand the challenges these businesses face in working with or entering the AAA sector and develop a strategic plan to address these issues and more fully develop these individual companies into an industry "cluster."
The specific activities of this project are:
- Identify, catalog and categorize Maine-based manufacturers and service providers who currently supply and those who would like to supply components, products and services to aircraft, aerospace or aviation OEMs and Prime Contractors.
- Identify core technical competencies and challenges of each business through one-on-one interviews and surveys.
- Research, identify, catalog and categorize the companies who purchase components and manufacturing services within the aircraft, aerospace and aviation industry.
- Identify what is required to be a provider or contractor to those companies and how they prefer to do business.
- Research and identify other successful AAA clusters nationally and internationally.
- With the guidance of an industry-based steering committee, develop a strategic vision to expand, strengthen and grow Maine's AAA Cluster.
- Develop a strategic plan to match the needs of Maine's AAA-related businesses with public and private resources - such as worker training, capitalization support, technology, process improvement, etc.
