MMPA Newsletter News
MMPA is moving to an electronic newsletter in the near future. This will allow us to more broadly distribute news coming out of the Association.
Stay tuned as we begin the process of gathering email addresses for everyone. If you know someone that would like to be included in our list, please let us know!
MMPA Members Tour Pratt & Whitney
Pratt & Whitney (motto: We Pioneer, We Buid, We Serve) hosted the MMPA February Monthly Meeting at their 877,000 square foot plant in North Berwick, the largest manufacturing facility in Maine under one roof.
Pratt & Whitney began production of aerospace engine parts at its North Berwick plant in September 1979. North Berwick manufactures 5 classes of parts - high and low compressor stators, outer air seals, non-cooled turbine vanes, brush seals and bearing compartments and currently employs approximately 1,500 people on four shifts.
Their success can be attributed to the work ethic of the local labor market. These individuals possess a " can do attitude " and the will to continually improve the operations. Lean manufacturing and Continuous Improvement strategies have been the foundation of North Berwick's ability to maintain its competitive advantage over other facilities worldwide.
The dinner meeting speakers included introduction of new members David McCulloch and Greg Peace from Helical Solutions; Will Rood and Lawrence Higgins from B&B Precise Products; Peter Monaghan from Cincinnati Lamb, and a short introduction from returning member Industrial Metal Recycling, represented by Randy Parenteau. Then Roger Paquette, Roger Descoteaux and Leo Dionne provided a PowerPoint presentation on best business practices at Pratt & Whitney and answered questions from the enthusiastic audience. Leo Dionne is on the MMPA Board of Directors.
Our sincere thanks to Pratt & Whitney and Leo Dionne, for a warm welcome and a remarkable tour of their facility.

Letter from the President
We're approaching spring! As you have seen in the past few months, MMPA has increased membership enrollments, already surpassing recruitment from last year! Word is out…MMPA has programs and services that are very valuable, industry members are spreading the word on programs to bring federal contract and defense work to our membership and the staff are presenting member benefit programs to help save money! Only by contacting your association and using the programs will you get the benefits!
Coming up soon is the MMPA membership drive, statewide meetings to gather input on the industry and association and, of course, our famous and fantastic golf tournament! Be looking for the brochure! Sign up quickly because it fills up fast!
Our tours have been extraordinary! Our thanks to EVM and Butler Bros. for hosting the January tour! A great turnout and great tours! February we visited Pratt & Whitney. This month we are off to Maine Maritime Academy in Castine and in April, we have two events scheduled: Maine Machine Products in South Paris and the Northern Maine "Matchmakers Business Conference" in Houlton and Presque Isle. Watch for details and registration.
MMPA is working with the board and membership to support the Governors proposal to eliminate the personal property tax on equipment and machinery. If you have not responded, call the office and they will send you information. Let's work with our state to reinvest this money in people, jobs and communities!
Listen folks….your investment in your association is important. Don't hesitate to call, email or fax our office if you have questions, issues or business needs.

How do you spend your weekend?
Well, your executive director, Lisa Martin, goes to the National Toboggan Races in Camden.
For 6 years, Lisa and her sisters, Michelle Martin and Katie Martin LoScuito, have trekked up the coast to the Camden Snow Bowl to participate in the nationals!
The first year, the girls won the "fastest female" trophy in the 4-person division. The "Fanny Friction" team has tried to maintain their title, but have succumbed to teams such as "Hot Flashes, Irish Nachos, Rift Rafters and We's Wicked Fast"! The team names and costumes are a hoot! This year, "Fanny Friction," sponsored by Public Affairs Group of Augusta, had some great runs of 9.0 and 8.78 seconds but weren't able to beat the newer, faster toboggans.
Next year, the "Fanny Friction" team will build a new sled and head back up to try and reclaim a trophy! If not, a great time and worthy cause will do!

MMPA Board Meeting
The MMPA board of directors met on January 29, 2004 at WahlcoMetroflex. Our thanks to Steve Boulet and WahlcoMetroflex for hosting our meeting!
We were particularly pleased when Congressman Mike Michaud joined us! Congressman Michaud has served on the MMPA board for several years and during his term as pro temp senate president. Some board members shared the "state of the industry" with the congressman, stating that workforce is still a critical issue for the industry among other issues. Congressman Michaud spoke for a few minutes on his perspective. He listed the different committees he serves on in Washington. Congressman Michaud offered his support, with grant research and other related manufacturing issues. Lisa Martin shared information on the Maine-IAC group so he would have that reference.
The congressman and Andrea Quaid joined Steve Boulet for a tour of WahlcoMetroflex.
